DESCR.TXT for Aaron Johnson, now a DOOM Master
----------------------------------------------
exam completed on 1994 09 23 (Friday)
Controls used
-------------
Keyboard only, although the mouse is enabled.
I know most people now swear by the keyboard+mouse combination, but I
haven't quite got the hang of it. From what I've seen about these arguments,
the pro's of the mouse are: better aiming, faster turning if you have
mouse acceleration in your mouse driver, and the ability to move around in
a circle while facing the center so you can kill whatever is there easily.
I can't seem to keep this last thing going. The first two are fine, but
the last one require you to periodically pick-up and reposition the mouse,
which I loath to do. I've re-configured my keyboard so the strafe-left and
strafe-right keys are the "7" and "9" keys on my keypad. That way I can
press "7" and tap "6" periodically to accomplish the circling maneuver.
You will see me doing this if you view the e3m9-uv.lmp demo.
System used
-----------
486dx2-66 clone, 16mb ram, SB16, Microsoft Mouse, 15" monitor,
Cirrus VLB graphics card.
What's good in FREE.LMP
-----------------------
I've seen several messages on the 'net and CI$ about new DOOM players having
problems with E2M9. Four Barons and eight Cacodemons. I admit that the
first time I played this level, I panicked and died almost immediatly.
However, with the multitude of items found in each point of the "star", all
the ammo found inside the Caco's area, and the monsters habit of killing each
other, I quickly found it easy. In my wad I've removed every weapon, health,
and ammo that was there. I put in one shotgun and two boxes of shells.
That's it. I still managed to have 9 shells left over at the end. Maybe I
should've tried it with only 1 box of shells. I think I'll let someone out
there try that.
Info on FREE.WAD
----------------
As mentioned above, it is E2M9 (Fortress of Mystery) with modifications.
I used DEU 5.2 to extract and modify the level.
THE AUTHENTICATION DANCE IS DONE AT THE END!!! I was a little busy at the
beginning. :)
Version of DOOM used
--------------------
1.666 (with the patch for E3M9)
Comments
--------
That cyberdemon in E3M9 ain't so tough! :) I actually had the most trouble with
E2M4. There isn't alot of ammo or health as compared to the amount of
monsters, so I had to force them to kill each other whenever possible, or use
my fists to conserve ammo. Too bad there wasn't a rocket launcher. E1M8 is
a piece of cake, but I have seen messages about this level too. If you have
problems completing this level, all I can say is watch the demo so you can
see what is possible.
